Technical Director
Salary Rate: $58,900
Job Summary
The Technical Director reports to the Production Manager and Producing Artistic Director and Is Responsible for: Providing build drawings for shop staff, purchasing materials and tracking scenic dept budgets, supervising and supporting construction and scene shop staff to ensure accuracy and quality standards, install scenery on stage in conjunction with shop staff, oversee and support work of run crew during rehearsals and performances, maintain theatre space as it relates to stage, rigging and production, oversee and lead rigging of scenery in accordance to ESTA Standards, and support other technical departments when required.
Job Responsibilities and Duties
Build each mainstage production set per the specifications of the Scenic Designer.
Recommend and work with designers to adjust the design, if necessary, due to venue and budget constraints,
as well as safety standards.
Supply technical information, build drawings, and budget estimates for each design
Determine construction methods, schedules, materials, and mechanics for the building of each set
Supervise and assist in the construction of the set
Produce construction drawings
Supervise the full and complete installation and striking of each set, including all rigging and mechanical devices
Ensure proper functioning and safety of all moving scenic elements;
Attend production meetings, designer runs, and technical rehearsals, to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting the production;
Maintain and enforce schedules for all builds, load-ins, and strikes;
Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of the theatre, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities;
Monitor the condition of rigging equipment; to ESTA standards; arrange for the repair and replacement within
budgetary constraints; perform preventative maintenance on equipment
Knowledge
Understanding of the theatrical production process
Advanced knowledge of drafting, set construction, theatrical rigging, (including single purchase counterweight
fly system) welding, reading plans, and drafting
Proficient with AutoCAD and / or Vectorworks;
Proficient with Microsoft Office Google suite, general knowledge of cloud services and file sharing.
Proficient knowledge of theatrical rigging and theatre operations
Proficient knowledge of health and safety priorities and practices for the performing arts
Effectively troubleshoot problems
Maintain and project calm demeanor in high-demand situations
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Work independently and in collaboration with others and ability to prioritize, multi-task and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail needed
Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre or Technical Theatre from an accredited university or possess equivalent professional experience;
4+ years of experience in a professional theatre environment as either an assistant or a department head in a scenic department
Physical Requirements:
Ability to bend at the waist and lift items up to 50 lbs. to waist level;
Ability to move items up to 50 lbs. for distances of 25+ feet;
Ability to remain standing and active for an 8-12 hour shift;
Indoor activity with prolonged exposure to windowless work area;
Frequent exposure to fluorescent lighting and low light conditions;
Frequent exposure to dust;
Occasional exposure to fumes;
Occasional work at heights in excess of 40 feet;
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED
OSHA 10-HR or 30-HR General Industry
ETCP Theatre Rigging Certification a plus
