Dr. Carolyn Norman

Carolyn Norman received her undergraduate (Economics) and graduate (MSIA) degrees from Purdue University and her Ph.D. (Accounting) from Texas A&M University. She is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel (20 years) and recently retired professor from Virginia Commonwealth University where she was the Chair of the Accounting Department in the School of Business. She has co-authored three books, including four editions of Core Concepts of Accounting Information Systems, XBRL Essentials, and Corporate Governance and the U.S. Firm: A Review and Directions for Future Research. Carolyn also has 64 publications in accounting, accounting education, and accounting practice journals.

Carolyn’s service is as varied as her career experiences. As a 28-year academic, she served as an associate editor for several academic journals and served on many different committees for the School of Business, for Virginia Commonwealth University, and the American Accounting Association. Carolyn was either the Chair, Co-chair, or a member of 31 dissertation committees. She evaluated Accounting Departments for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), which is the premier accreditation organization for schools of business.

Carolyn is a Board Member for Goochland Leadership Enterprise (GLE) and a Council Member for Bon Secours Violence Response Team. She also served on the Board for the Central Virginia Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. As a licensed CPA in Virginia, she presented more than 30 of the VBOA approved 2-hour Ethics Seminar for various organizations in Richmond, VA. Carolyn was awarded a certificate in Professional Fundraising from Boston University (2025).
